Senior Optical/Imaging Systems Engineer
Glass Imaging Inc.
Senior Optical/Imaging Systems Engineer
Glass Imaging is looking for an Optical Engineer with experience in image processing and computer vision, to work on advanced problems in real-world computational photography.
You would use your multi-disciplinary skills in optical design, prototyping, characterization, calibration and testing to help Glass build and refine its next generation photographic imaging systems at the intersection of optics and algorithms. You would work closely with software and mechanical engineering team members to take novel optical designs from the idea to prototype implementation and design for mass production phases (including working with supply chain partners), as well as help apply optical principles to algorithm design. Knowledge of computational imaging techniques will be essential. You have a keen eye for quality.
Founded by former Apple Engineers who brought you Portrait Mode and other iPhone camera features, Glass is building the future of miniaturized imaging that delivers astonishing image quality and user experience. You’d be joining a unique team of creative and enthusiastic engineers with a passion and track record for revolutionizing the world of photography.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience with optical system design, from design to mass production
- Proficient with optical design software (e.g. Zemax, CodeV etc) for lens design and analysis. Understanding of lens and sensor design principles, ray tracing, aberration correction, system trade-offs, tolerance, stray-light and sensitivity analysis.
- Able to partner with external vendors to specify or co-develop advanced manufacturing techniques, materials (glass, molded plastic), processes and quality control.
- Design lab test and automation for image system calibration, testing, data acquisition.
- Able to integrate optics hardware, electronics, mechanics and software control systems, e.g. work with auto-focus, OIS control systems.
- Practical SW experience with Python, Bash etc, e.g. for image capture, format conversion, camera calibration, characterization, interfacing and scripting.
- Understanding of camera ISP pipelines (sensor readout, demosaicing, noise/detail, AWB, color/tone correction etc) and tuning; familiarity with image quality analysis.
- Good mathematical skills with application to statistical modeling, vision/color science.
- Excellent communication, analytical and problem solving skills, strong self motivation
- Ability to document ideas clearly and produce new IP
- Bachelors plus 3+ years of relevant Industry experience / MSc or PhD in a related technical field
Desired Experience:
- Familiarity with image processing, graphics & ML / Computer Vision algorithms, e.g.:
- ISP-style functions (demosaic, denoise, HDR etc)
- Inverse imaging: Super-resolution, deconvolution, inpainting
- Computational photography: e.g. coded aperture, light fields, image fusion
- Computer vision: Stereo Depth estimation, Guided/Bilateral filtering, feature matching, style transfer, optimization, BLAS; Libraries such as OpenCV
- Good software engineering skills, e.g. C/C++, Android or iOS development experience
- Knowledge of Deep Learning implementations for computer vision (CNNs etc), with PyTorch or Tensorflow
- Nice to have: embedded / low level real-time algorithm implementations experience: hardware image sensor interfaces, GPUs, FPGAs, Low level device drivers.
- Published papers in relevant technical conferences
Background on Glass:
Glass's innovative camera architecture combines a new type of lens with state-of-the-art AI algorithms to form an image on a large image sensor while keeping the overall thickness of the camera module thin enough to fit in any smartphone.
The result is a camera module that eliminates the need for multiple lenses and the complexity that comes with it. Our technology drastically improves image quality to enable features like real HDR, Portrait Video, 10-15x resolution gain and 20x less noise for low light imaging, and more, i.e. the quality of a DSLR with the smartphone camera app experience, in your pocket. Our business model is based around licensing our unique technology to a $40B+ market.
We are a small friendly startup, based in Los Altos CA. Some of our work requires interacting with prototype hardware, so we are focused on candidates able to work in the SF Bay Area. We provide competitive benefits including salary, stock options, and health insurance.
We look forward to hearing from you!
