Tunnel Design Engineer
Dubai, UAE
ENGINEERING, Field Engineering
In office
Full-time
The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more, enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
We are looking for a Tunnel Design Engineer to own geotechnical and tunnel design from ground investigation through construction — lining design, support of excavation, dewatering, and settlement impact on adjacent structures. On site in Dubai, this is a founding role on the regional team.
Responsibilities
- Create geotechnical data reports, geotechnical interpretation reports, and geotechnical design reports for tunnel and shaft construction
- Create temporary support of excavation designs, reports, and drawings
- Produce tunnel lining design documentation, including lateral earth pressure calculations and durability design for aggressive ground and groundwater conditions
- Perform ground settlement and construction impact analysis of subsurface structures (e.g., shafts, tunnels) and third-party infrastructure (e.g., high-rise foundations, utilities, metro assets) along the alignment
- Create and oversee the implementation of settlement monitoring plans
- Plan and execute geotechnical investigations
- Design and oversee dewatering and groundwater control schemes, including assessment of dewatering-induced settlement on adjacent buildings and utilities
- Assist in the collection and review of as-built drawings and existing geotechnical data for subsurface due diligence, coordinating with RTA, Dubai Municipality, and utility authorities
- Provide geotechnical recommendations for construction means and methods
- Perform construction period observation and inspection
- Support brick operations with geotechnical recommendations and testing oversight.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Geology, Engineering Geology, or related discipline
- Anywhere from 1–10 years of experience working in underground construction (tunneling, mining). Candidates with more experience will be given a title and compensation reflective of their skillset
- Currently based in the UAE or GCC region, or eligible to work in the UAE
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Coursework in geotechnical engineering (soils and rock mechanics), structural analysis, foundation engineering, hydrology, earthquake engineering, engineering geology, tunnel engineering, reinforced concrete design, steel design, and constitutive modeling
- Preliminary and final analysis and design experience (geotechnical investigation, slope stability analysis, support of excavation, construction impact to adjacent buildings and utilities, providing geotechnical design parameter recommendations)
- Experience with Dubai/Gulf ground conditions: loose to dense cohesionless marine sands, cemented sand and sabkha deposits with concretions and voids, weak calcareous and gypsiferous sandstones and siltstones, and high, hyper-saline groundwater tables aggressive to concrete and steel
- Soft-ground TBM (EPB or slurry) design experience, including face pressure assessment in cohesionless, water-bearing soils
- Experience designing for long-term uplift and buoyancy of underground structures in high water table conditions
- UAE Society of Engineers registration (or eligibility) a plus
- Prior design or construction experience on major Gulf infrastructure projects (e.g., metro, road tunnels, deep basements, stormwater tunnels) a plus
Additional Requirements
The position may require extended hours and weekend work
This role is on site / in person in Dubai, UAE
The position will require periodic work inside tunnels. Candidates should be comfortable with this
