The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more, with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
Overview
The Mechanical Engineering Interns will support the development and delivery of TBM’s used in our projects. These are not observation-only internships. You will own clearly defined engineering projects, work directly with experienced engineers and technicians, and contribute to hardware that will be built, tested, and deployed onsite. We are looking for practical, curious candidates who enjoy designing, building, testing, and solving real engineering problems.
Responsibilities
- Design or support the design of tunnel boring machine components, support equipment, construction vehicles, material-handling systems, and tunnel infrastructure.
- Create 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, basic engineering calculations, and bills of materials.
- Assist with mechanism design, machine components, fabricated structures, hydraulic systems, tooling, and test fixtures.
- Support the fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, and commissioning of mechanical hardware.
- Work with engineers and technicians to troubleshoot equipment and develop practical solutions to field issues.
- Participate in design reviews, testing activities, failure investigations, and design improvements.
- Track assigned projects and communicate progress, risks, and schedule changes to relevant team members.
- Ensure designs consider safety, manufacturability, assembly, reliability, maintenance, and overall system requirements.
- Follow applicable UAE safety regulations, engineering standards, and site procedures.
Basic Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks or another parametric 3D CAD platform.
- Understanding of engineering fundamentals, including mechanics, materials, machine elements, and manufacturing processes.
- Hands-on experience with fabrication, machining, assembly, robotics, testing, or mechanical projects through university, internships, competitions, or personal work.
- Ability to work onsite in Dubai for the agreed internship period.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Previous internship, workshop, laboratory, Formula Student, robotics, rocketry, Baja SAE, or engineering competition experience.
- Basic knowledge of machine design, mechanisms, mechatronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, dynamics, and material selection.
- Experience producing manufacturing drawings and applying basic GD&T.
- Familiarity with hand calculations, FEA, design for manufacturing, and tolerance analysis.
- Experience using machine tools, welding equipment, 3D printers, or other prototyping and fabrication methods.
- Participation in the Not-a-Boring Competition is a plus.
- Strong teamwork, ownership, attention to detail, and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
