Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Operator
Dubai, UAE
CONSTRUCTION, TBM Maintenance & Operations
In office
Full-time
The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more, enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
We're looking for an experienced TBM Operator to drive and monitor Prufrock on the Dubai Loop. Working from the launch site and control room — in close coordination with our Operations Center — you'll own machine performance on your shift: advance rate, steering, face stability, and the continuous lining installation that sets Prufrock apart. You'll work hand-in-hand with miners, mechanics, electricians, and field engineers to keep every shift on-line, on-grade, and on schedule, as part of the founding field team on one of the most high-profile tunneling projects in the world.
Responsibilities
- Operate an Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) within varying ground conditions
- Manage ground conditioning to maintain a positive Earth Pressure during operations
- Review hydraulic and pneumatic schematics to test, identify, diagnose and repair issues with mechanical systems, subsystems, and components
- Manage project documentation, drawings, tunnel alignment profiles, and different soil properties
- Maintain and produce operational reports and daily activity logs
- Promote a safety culture within team and during operations, in compliance with UAE regulations and project safety standards
- Train and mentor other team members
- Operate specialized construction equipment and vehicles, safely and productively
Basic Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- 2+ years of experience in heavy equipment operation used in excavations, loading, and unloading of materials
- Currently based in the UAE or GCC region, or eligible to work in the UAE
Preferred Skills and Experience
- 2+ years of experience operating an Earth Pressure Balance Machine, ideally in cohesionless, water-bearing soils like those beneath Dubai
- Knowledge and operational experience with programmable logic controller (PLC) systems
- Knowledge of TBM guidance systems and accompanying pre-cast segment orientations and build sequencing
- Versed knowledge of TBM conditioning methods
- Specialized in the operation of electro-mechanical and mechanical equipment as it relates to TBMs
- Ability to set up site according to plans and specifications
- Ability to use surveying equipment, interpret plans and properly complete calculations for grade and alignment
- Valid UAE heavy vehicle driving license, or ability to obtain one
- Experience on major Gulf-region infrastructure projects (metro, road, or utility tunnels) a plus
Additional Requirements
- Position may require extended hours and weekend work
- This role is on site / in person in Dubai, UAE
